The Duchess

The DuchessReal Names: Rebecca, last name unknown
Origin:
17th Century Europe
Function:
Spook

History:
Born as a simple farm girl, a local noble took Rebecca in when invading armies murdered her family and destroyed their land. Rebecca was educated and treated as a true lady of the court though her blood was not. Soon enough, the two fell in love and rumors quickly spread of their affair. Doing what was considered proper, the noble married another of "higher quality" blood.

The new lady of the manor knew of her husband's continued tryst with the servant girl and took every chance to make Rebecca's life miserable. Yet the love between the noble and Rebecca could not be unsworn... or so Rebecca thought.

The day came when Rebecca was forcibly cast out lest the noble suffer continued embarassment amongst his peers. Alone, Rebecca secretly made home in an unused barn amongst spiders and other vermin. Yet, her love continued and letters were written by dim candlelight with only the spiders to comfort her. So was her life for over eight years with no return letters.

The Lady of the Manor found the letters and hired a thug to dispatch the "troublesome" girl. Wearing a dark hood, the thug approached Rebecca in her sleep. He was no professional, though, a dull blade ripped across her neck. Rebecca did what she could to defend herself before she died: she lashed out and pulled the only thing she could grab, the hood. It was her lover.

Betrayed and dying, Rebecca swore she'd return to seek vengeance. Her ex-lover left her body to rot in the barn.

Those she called family quickly wrapped her tightly in a cocoon. The makeshift web-bandage stopped the flow of blood enough for her to survive... of sorts. Her friends injected venom into her body and through the power of hate, Rebecca emerged three months later forever changed to seek her vengeance on the Lord and Lady of the Manor.
